Mac Books App Night Mode

One of the downsides of using a computer, or any device with a screen, is the effect it can have on both our eyes and our circadian rhythms. While eye damage is unlikely and eye strain somewhat contentious there’s much more research that shows the effect of certain colors of light on our brains at different times of the day.

However, before you try this out, update your OS X to OS X Yosemite. Else, you won’t be able to access this feature and enable night mode in your Mac PC. Alternatively, if you use iBook, here’s a quick workaround to enable the Night mode on iBook. All you need to do is click on the font settings button and select ‘Night’. Sep 24, 2019  Use Night Shift on your Mac. Turn on Dark Mode for a great viewing experience in low-light environments. Learn how to adjust the display settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Use Control Center to quickly access settings and apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The blue-ish light emitted by most computer and mobile device displays can cause tired eyes to struggle at night, and it fools our brain into thinking it’s daytime, even when it’s late at night. The solution Apple has come up with is to allow displays on its Macs and iOS devices to shift color automatically at certain times of the day. The screen goes from blue-ish color during the day to warmer more yellow tones in the late evening. That yellowish color is supposed to take less effort to view on the part of our eyes and is less likely to make our brains think it’s still daytime. As you would expect, you can control when and if Night Shift is invoked.

What is Night Shift?

Night Shift doesn’t need a separate app, it is a feature of macOS that uses your Mac’s clock and your geographic location to determine whether it’s day or night where you are. It then uses that information to set the color temperature of your display — colder during the daytime and warmer in the evening.

The idea is that by making colors warmer, it won’t disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm, or the body clock that controls them, to the same degree. Night Shift can be turned on and off manually, or you can set a schedule for specific times.

What does Night Shift do?

Your body clock controls circadian rhythm, which has been shown to be key to a number of health conditions. It controls when you feel tired or how you sleep. Disrupting it can be a factor in both physical and mental health problems. So it’s important to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day. By making your Mac’s display show warmer colors at night, night shift reduces the chance it will interrupt your sleep.

How to enable macOS Night Shift

  1. Go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. Select the Displays pane.
  3. Click on the Night Shift tab.
  4. Click on the Schedule menu.
  5. Choose Sunset to Sunrise to have Night Shift turn on and off automatically when it thinks it’s night time where you are.

How to set your own Night Shift schedule

  1. In Night Shift preferences, click on the Schedule menu.
  2. Choose Custom.
  3. Type a start time and finish time into the boxes.

How to control Night Shift manually

  1. If Night Shift is off, go to the Night Shift tab in System Preferences>Display and check the box labelled Turn on until tomorrow.
  2. If Night Shift is on, click on the Schedule menu in the Night shift tab and choose ‘Off.’
  3. Use the color temperature slider in the same window to control the degree to which colors change when Night Switch is turned on or off.

You can also turn Night Shift on or off manually from Notification Center.

  1. Click on the Notification Center icon in the top right of your Mac’s screen.
  2. At the very top of the window, in either Today View or Notifications, is a switch labelled Night Shift. Toggle it to switch the feature on or off.

The easiest method of all — ask Siri

You can ask Siri to turn Night shift on your Apple device on and off.

  1. Click on the Siri button in the menu bar. If you don’t see it, go to System Preferences then click the Siri pane and make sure “Enable ask Siri’ and ‘Show Siri in menu bar’ are both checked. Alternatively, press fn + spacebar.
  2. Say “Turn on Night Shift.”
  3. To switch it off, activate Siri again and say “Turn off Night Shift.”

Night Shift works with external displays if your Mac is connected to one (or more). However, it doesn’t work with projectors or televisions.

Night Shift stuck? Here’s how to fix it

Occasionally, usually when a Mac goes to sleep while it’s on, Night Shift can become stuck in the “on” setting. When this happens, turning it off then on then off again doesn’t seem to have much effect. There is a solution, though.

  1. Go to System Preferences and choose Displays then click the Night Shift tab.
  2. With Night Shift on, make sure “Turn on until tomorrow” is unchecked.
  3. Slide the warmth slider all the way to the left, then all the way to the right again.

That should fix it and you should now be able to switch Night Shift off.

If that doesn’t work, try running macOS maintenance scripts using CleanMyMac X. These maintenance scripts can fix problems with files on your Mac that can cause all sorts of problems. CleanMyMac makes it very easy to run them.

  1. Download CleanMyMac for free here.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Click on Maintenance.
  4. Check the boxes next to Run Maintenance Scripts and Verify Disk Permissions.
  5. Press Run.

Limitations

Night Shift can be great, particularly when your eyes are tired – the warmer light is much less harsh on them than cold blue light. However, it does make colors look different. So you wouldn’t want to have it on while you’re editing photographs or video. Also, you can’t deactivate it for specific apps or Mission Control desktops — it’s all or nothing. For tasks that involve writing, or working with spreadsheets, however, it’s excellent.

Night Shift is a very useful feature than can make it easier for your eyes to focus on your Mac’s display late in the evening. It also reduces the risk of disrupting your body clock and interfering with your sleep, which can lead to health problems. It’s very easy to use and there are options for how warm the screen becomes when it’s on, as well as for scheduling when it starts and stops.

With iOS 12, Apple went out of its way to revamp iBooks. The changes are so intense that even the app name has changed to ‘Books.’ And from a design perspective, Books app now looks aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. The updated tabs — Reading Now, Library, Book Store, and Search — really help with keeping things simple and straightforward. But is that all?

Absolutely not. If you were vying a dark mode, then it’s finally here. Admittedly, previous iBooks iterations did have the functionality to switch to a dark theme while reading, but Books has gone the entire distance and implemented a similar feature to work across the app. But it works somewhat weirdly, almost as if it has a mind of its own. Let's find out why.

So How Does It Work?

If you are familiar with the Auto-Night Theme in the older iBooks iterations, then this new dark mode practically works the same way. Move into a dimly lit room (doesn't have to pitch black), and the app switches to a dark theme immediately. Return to a brighter place, and it changes back to the default. The feature works smoothly, thanks to the ambient light sensor on your iPhone or iPad.

However, this dark theme cannot be turned on or off at will, which is pretty strange. While you can activate it even in a well-lit area by covering the light sensors on your iPhone or iPad, it immediately turns back on when uncovered. That can be annoying if you prefer the dark mode to be left on by default.

And at night, you need to turn on your lights, or at least move to your night lamp if you want to switch back to the default theme. Once again, not convenient if you don’t like the dark mode. Apple needs to provide a toggle to turn it on or off manually. For now, it works automatically.

Dark Mode In Action

Regardless of its automatic behavior, the Books’ new dark mode works really well. The entire screen goes completely dark in low light surroundings, yet essential elements are visible clearly. Book covers render crisply over the dark background without any strange artifacts, which means that Apple has put in the work without resorting to a cheap color inversion scheme.

Besides, titles and other relevant information is displayed in pure white, but not bright enough to be glaring in the dark. Other items, such as the menu icons, read percentages, inactive tab, etc., are presented in a shade of gray, thus preventing them from taking up the spotlight while just ‘being there’ for when you need them.

The dark mode also works seamlessly across all tabs within the app. The Book Store, in particular, looks fantastic once it kicks in, where you can search for hours late at night without tiring your eyes.

However, the verification screen that shows up whenever you choose to download an eBook doesn't seem to be affected at all and sharply contrasts against the dark background. Fix it, Apple!

Dark Mode While Reading

When it comes to reading your eBooks, the Books app sports the Auto-Night Theme that was introduced several iBooks iterations ago. When reading eBooks, it kicks in automatically in low-light conditions and fully complements the newer dark mode on the Books main user interface.

Thankfully, Auto-Night Theme can be turned on or off at will. Merely tap the aA icon to the upper-right corner of the screen after opening an eBook, and you can use the toggle next to Auto-Night Theme to enable or disable the feature.

Right above the Auto-Night Theme switch, you also have four separate shades of color to change the background of any eBook manually when you see fit.

If Dark Mode Gets Stuck

At times, Books can get stuck in dark mode, which means that no amount of surrounding light can make it switch back to the default theme. If that’s the case, just force-quit the app, and then relaunch it to set things straight.

Tip: To force-quit Books, simply double-tap the Home button twice to open the app switcher, and then swipe the Books app card upward. On iPhone X and newer models, you need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause briefly at the middle to bring up the app switcher.

Night Mode Mac Os

Easier on the Eyes

So, that's how this new yet unconventional dark mode works in Books. Kudos to Apple for finally presenting a dark mode that works well across the app. However, Books should provide more control over how the entire thing works, kind of like the Auto-Night Theme when reading eBooks.

Not everyone likes a feature without an opt-out or customizations. Here's hoping Apple does something about that.
